About the course and how it works for you
 In
1998 The Academy of Professional Investigation (API) launched a Distance
Learning Course (DLC). The course content was based on the accumulated
knowledge and experience of a number of leading Private Investigators within
the profession at that time. In the beginning the DLC consisted of a number
of teaching modules with an assessment at the conclusion of each module and
then a final written test once every module had been completed.
Over the past 10 years the course has evolved
in line with current legislation and technological advances to ensure that
the subject matter is as up to date as possible.
With the probability of licensing on the
horizon the Academy has taken the original DLC to another level and in
conjunction with Edexcel they have developed the BTEC Advanced Private
Investigation Level 3 Diploma Qualification. With the NVQ in
Investigation being a vocational qualification with the requirement for the
candidate to be assessed within the work place the course offers those
students that prefer home study a reliable and professional route to obtain
a worthwhile qualification based upon sound judgement and tried and tested
procedures. This qualification is an excellent opportunity for either new
investigators or the more experienced investigator to achieve an approved
qualification
The Academy had to re-evaluate the methods of
assessment to ensure that individual students were given regular feed back
and are also now required to complete portfolio assignments throughout the
course. These assignments can also be used as further evaluation of the
student’s abilities in understanding the very diverse subject of Private
Investigation. This is in part achieved by the student submitting their work
at the completion of Modules 3, 6, 9, and 12, after which they would then
take the final written test. Apart from these mandatory submissions by the
students the Academy also has mentors available to answer any questions or
queries that the student may have throughout the duration of the course.
We believe that the
course content contains all the core units of competency and covers all the
recognised areas of study that have been indicated by the (SIA) the Security
Industry Authority and offers all the knowledge that an investigator would
require to enter the industry as a fully competent professional.

As you work through the course you will build up the knowledge and confidence necessary to launch you into an exciting, rewarding and adventurous career in Professional Private Investigation.
How long will it take to complete the course?
This will depend very
much on your personal time and commitment, effort and enthusiasm that you
are willing to devote to it. On average students studying on a part-time
basis will take about 3 to 6 months to complete and achieve. However, we
have had students, who have studied full time, and completed the course within 6
weeks.
 When
you have successfully completed all the Course modules, you will be able
to take the Final Examination.
This is also completed at home and the paper together with your
portfolio work submitted to the Academy.
If you achieve
the required minimum 65% passmark, 80% & over for a pass with Merit or
90% & over for a pass with Distinction you will then receive your
Edexcel BTEC Advanced Diploma in Private Investigation in recognition of
your achievement.
This Course is
accredited under a nationally recognised awarding body.
 Having
obtained the Edexcel BTEC Advanced Private Investigation Level 3 Diploma,
you will be in the elite category of Qualified Professional Investigators.
